PLANS to demolish a derelict supermarket and replace it with a state of the art
store have been approved, which will bring jobs and discount shopping to Gosforth.
Newcastle City Council’s Planning Committee today [Friday, June 12th] granted approval for the construction of a 10,250 sq ft Netto supermarket on
Wansbeck Road South in Gosforth.
Construction will begin after two derelict buildings on the site – the former
Collingwood pub and a derelict FreshXpress supermarket – are demolished.
The approval follows a public consultation in January which reflected widespread
public support for the new building.
Leading property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall oversaw the successful application
on behalf of Netto.
Sean Hedley, Head of Planning said: “Today’s approval is excellent news for Netto
and local residents because the land will be put to beneficial use again. Sanderson
Weatherall worked hard to ensure that this project was a success.
“A public exhibition uncovered widespread support from the community for the
redevelopment of this neglected and rundown site. What’s more, it will create
jobs during construction and when the supermarket is open – and that is very welcome
in the current economic climate.”
The new single storey store uses existing access point from Wansbeck Road South.
The derelict Collingwood pub adjacent to the site will also be demolished to accommodate
the new supermarket.
The store, which has a slightly larger footprint than the current supermarket,
includes more than 50 car parking spaces, bike racks and environmentally friendly
landscaping.
The store is expected to open at the end of 2009.
